Angry JUNE31st 2008 Goodbye to XP

I came across this the other day in one of my daily e-mail d/loads which many members may find interesting if not disturbing, I certainly do................

"With Windows Vista's popularity still on the low side, Microsoft is trying anything they can think of to boost their new operating system's sales. Unfortunately, they have found one method that most of us will have a hard time accepting. On June 31, 2008, Microsoft will basically "kill off" their famous operating system of Windows XP, taking it off the market all together.

This fate was expected, since XP was originally released in 2001, but with the push of Vista, the loss will be even harder on Windows users. Windows XP users can still continue to run the operating system for as long as they want, but product support from Microsoft will end on April 14, 2009. That's also when it will become even harder to buy the XP operating system.
So, why would Microsoft remove Windows XP from the market? Well, like most software corporations, Microsoft is out to make a profit, while also providing the newest and most up to date software to their customers. Since Vista is their latest version of Windows, they are trying to make it the most popular operating system on the market. Therefore, they are removing the older versions of Windows from the market to make more room for Vista.
Also, larger enterprises have been slow in transitioning their computer systems from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Microsoft hopes that by removing Windows XP, those larger organizations will finally make the move over to Vista.
For those of you who are looking at buying a new computer and want Windows XP installed on it, you'll want to grab a copy before June 2008. Just giving you a heads up!"

Windows XP gets two-year extension
But only for specialised low-end PCs

Shaun Nichols in California, vnunet.com 04 Apr 2008

ADVERTISEMENTMicrosoft is to extend the availability of Windows XP by two years.

But the extension will apply only to extremely specialised low-end PCs, and not to common consumer models.

A company spokesperson told vnunet.com that availability will be limited to PCs classified by Microsoft as "ultra-low cost" .

"We believe that Windows Vista is the best way to address customer and partner needs on mainstream PCs," said the spokesperson.

"But Microsoft recognises a growing class of hardware-constrained, lower-cost PCs that would benefit from a different Windows-based solution.

"While Vista provides an easier and more secure user experience, XP Home provides an effective solution on these devices from a performance and cost perspective."

Microsoft had originally planned to stop shipping new copies of XP to hardware vendors on 31 January 2008.

However, after PC makers lobbied the company to extend the deadline, Microsoft moved XP's termination back to 30 June.

The company said that this deadline will remain in place for most machines, forcing vendors to offer Vista on most new PCs.

"We are very proud of the progress we have made with Windows Vista over the past 16 months," said Michael Dix, general manager of Windows client product management.

"Given this landscape, and after consulting with our partners, apart from today's announced extension of Windows XP Home for ultra-low cost PCs, we are maintaining the timelines we announced in September."

Sorry Margaret, a week too late with my warning You are good for over 1 year - but then XP will have more and more vulnerabilities that MS will not be addressing. Perhaps by then, more users will turn to the likes of Linux? I will certainly be trying it!

Although they are not selling it it will be supported for a while yet so don't panic and even when they stop supporting it you will still be able to use it just not get any updates
you can still use 98se but there is little or no support for auto updates you will have to search the net to update

For what most people do with a PC I suspect they will not have many problems with Vista. Look at your old PC, it has XP on it and is screwed up for software reasons.

Re: JUNE31st 2008 Goodbye to XP

HP are stopping building pcs and notebooks with xp approx August this year. they were meant to stop 12 months ago, but couldnt. However, they are currntly building machines that ship with vista, can be downgraded (legally) to xp and the upgraded again to vista when you'r ready (all licensing is sorted with Microsoft so this incurs no extra charge)
