The use of your word detective Jay reminded me that Inspector Morse was also an Oxford Union member -it features in one of the episodes (Greeks bearing Gifts) where he goes to a debate.

A few interesting facts about the Oxford Union:
5 PM's have been in office there -Gladstone, Salisbury, Asquith, MacMillan and Heath.
The Queen attended a debate in 1968
It's first woman president was elected in 1968, Benazir Bhutto became it's most well-known female president. In 1986 all 3 offices (President, Librarian and Treasurer) were occupied by women for the first time.

The most controversial debate ever was held in 1933 when the motion was: "This house will in no circumstances fight for it's King and Country"
It was passed 275 votes to 153! So strangely enough the pacifists won...
