Re: Could Boris be the next Prime Minister?

I've been a little busy today and therefore not had the time to read the many posts on this matter, so excuse me if I am repeating what may have already been said. I am about as far removed from being a Tory as it's possible to be but I have to say that I like Boris the Buffoon. I think he shows that rare thing, humanity in politics. He also does something that not many politicians do, he makes me smile. However there are a number of reasons why he will not be the next prime minister. One of the main reasons is that he would have to become a member of parliament and to do that he would have to contest a bi-election in the next couple of years. This would presumably need to be a safe seat for the Tories. He would, of course, have then have to resign as mayor of London. He would then need to stand for election as the leader of the party (and of course win). The problem with this scenario, as Boris and everyone around him would know, is that he would lose an incredible amount of credibility and be seen as a self-seeking individual who is only thinking about himself. Now this probably describes most politicians but not, I think, our Boris. He would also be seen as abandoning his post and the people of London who voted for him for pure selfish gain. He also said himself that his recent "hanging in the air stunt" probably killed off his chances anyway. He is, I fear, more astute than most people give him credit for. There is also the small matter of the possible slaughter at the poles if the current "government" (I use the term loosely) carries on in its austerity-at-all-costs approach to the economy.
I believe Boris is best left to his post in London (I wouldn't want him let loose on the nation anyway - I said I liked him, not that I thought he was a good politician) and I'm sure that is probably where he sees himself anyway. I don't even believe that the olympics will stand him in any stead for any length of time, like most things it will be forgotten in a few short months.
