Rangers however felt threatened by these immigrants and based their identity off the opposite of what Celtic were. This is why Rangers never signed a Catholic player till the 1980s when Souness signed then Celtic player Mo Johnstone, with Souness later revealing that the Rangers board had advised he didn't sign any Catholics in order to not upset any Rangers fans. Protestant manager Jock Stein summed it up perfectly:
"Jock, if there were two players, one Catholic and one Protestant. Who would you sign?"
"The Protestant"
"Why?"
"Because I know that Rangers would never sign the Catholic".
Celtic is and always will be a club open to all, no sectarian songs have been sung at Celtic Park for years and it will continue to be this way. The same cannot be said for Rangers however when they seem to content for singing 'The Famine Song' and adding the little 'F*ck the pope and the vatican' when singing Follow Follow
