I was last in Rome mid-September 1986, Sue! It was really hot then too but I don't remember there being quite as many tourists - lots of Americans and Japanese around this time. I went into the Vatican Museums and the Basilica back then but this time just went in the Basilica as the security checks meant long queues -over 3 hrs to get in the Museum -about 30 mins to get in the church...it was worth it to see it again though. Some photos of St. Peter's follow.
The Pope's view
Carved doorway
The highly decorated nave
Heaving with tourists -folk with I-pads are a real pain!
Michelangelo Buonarotti's sculpture "La Pietà" - dated 1497. (Now kept behind glass).
Stone font
Cherub
Bronze with angel (my 2nd favourite thing)
Me and my guardian angel (my 1st favourite thing)
A bit of the Vatican's gold!
After this in the afternoon I visited Castel Sant'Angelo and the Colloseum/Foro Romano -photos to follow!
