My thoughts were that it is the shale layers that descend down through the quarry and the gasses that they contain, I only know this due to the Fracking debate. You can see from the picture the sandstone layers almost impervious to the weather, but the shale layer slopes away due to it being easily eroded. If it's not that, it's summat else.
