Roy confirms that this estate of small chalet bungalows , known as 'Sawdust City' because the walls were insulated with sawdust, was built in 1939 . The first occupants were mostly workers from the Bristol Aircraft factory at Clayton (later English Electric) and later foreign, mostly Italian) coal miners. It was never a PoW camp.
