Now hang on a sec, Chubbyman. It's no good blaming the ref. Based on our second half performance, we would have struggled to beat 8 men, never mind 10. Portsmouth were quicker than us and they won virtually all the second balls. It seemed like Pompey were playing with 12 anyway so one fewer would have made no difference.

The failure to make earlier substitutions is one of two tactical weaknesses. The other is to bring all 11 players back to defend corners and other set pieces. I cannot understand why we don't leave at least one player (Piero) upfield. There are two immediate advantages. The first is that he would occupy two opposing defenders. And following that, it would make our penalty area less crowded. A third major advantage, though, is that it would make some kind of target for our default hoofball clearance. With all 11 back, it is inevitable that the ball will come back at us immediately - and that is exactly how Portsmouth scored. But what do I know?
