Most serpently Barrie!  Ever come across penlight flares? Marvellous piece of kit, location identifier or in a straight line incendiary rocket/fire starter. 
Not advisable to be fired straight up from a fighting trench dug in a meter back from the tree line in a German pine forest ....... that is unless your trench escape routes are pretty damned uncluttered.
