Boris gave the EU 744million quid a few days ago...ostensibly to help the EU with the coronavirus crisis.
I don't really recall seeing much reported about this.
We are still paying A billion quid a month to the EU until we leave entirely in December, so the last thing we need is an extension....because sure as eggs are eggs they would be stinging us for more money to help support this failing organisation.

An extension is prohibited by law....so a new law would need to be passed to make an extension legal.
If the EU cannot come up with a deal then we leave by default.....and they will be the losers.(and they know this)
