I'm sure I am telling you something you already know A-B, but 'clout' is a lancashire way of saying clothes or cloth......but yes clouts were what we got......and while we are on the subject May didn't refer to the month but to the flowers of the Hawthorn bush, because they are only supposed to appear after a spell of warmish sunny weather.
