Cashy, yes the pain must have been bad...I have known people who have carried on in spite of the pain.
When I worked on the surgical unit I saw a chap bleed to death as a result of being unable to give up the alcohol.
I looked after him when I was a first year student, a second year student and he came Ito the unit while I was on surgical nights.....I cannot tell you how much effort went into trying to save his life.
We did not manage it.
So giving up anything has to be a positive choice....and it takes constant maintenance.
