Re: Tranmere away
"They haven't won here since 1958", said the commentator at last nights game. As if to emphasise what a bogey team Tranmere have become for Stanley.
For all fans of Div3 North, the result was identical - 0-1.
Ah! Those heady days of 1958, when Stanley ended the season runners-up to Scunthorpe & Lindsey Utd, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion to Div 2.
If ever there was an adage that summed up last nights game it was surely -'You can't put an old head on young shoulders'.
Up until the 49th minute this was a game with 0-0 written all over it. Devoid of any real quality, it was a scrappy game being fought out by two teams stuck at the bottom of L2 and it showed just why.
In the first half Stanley were presented with at least 3 golden opportunities to score but Love & particularly Hunter conspired to waste each one with rashly impulsive decisions.
It took our veteran captain to take the one opportunity he was given to apply some wisdom and calmly trick one defender to volley the ball superbly past the keeper & put Stanley 7 points clear of the abyss.
I can only disagree with other comments that we were the better team. Particularly after the goal, Rovers upped their game and began to put us under sustained pressure. Their general passing & possession was far superior to ours. Only their abysmal finishing ability and a defence on a par with 'Rorke's Drift' ensured we came away with all 3 points.
If I were John Doolan, I would make the whole bl***y team practise 100 x times 'one-on-one' situations with the keeper, until they engaged their brain before shooting wide or straight at him.
Our 'Goals For' tally would treble overnight.
