Just finished this week's Observer. I usually wait for a second hand copy to be pased on to me on Saturday, but decided l'd treat myself.
As well as proof readers, I think some good journalists wouldn't go amiss. Page after page of Confirmation photos? Nice for the children and their families but not at all interesting for anyone else.
The last couple of weeks have featured published stories without confirmation of all the facts, which then resulted in a retraction the following week. 'Gay hounded out of home,' being one example were all the facts only came out after publication. Same this week regarding Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club and the Wizard Carnival. A phone call asking for a reaction would make for better journalism than rehashing the story with all the facts the following week, surely?
Oh, for the pre tabloid days when The Observer was weighty as well as local and worthy.
