Perhaps it's all a marketing ploy by Sony et al. You've all got very nice TV sets, radios etc but you're not buying new ones often enough - why not create a scary 'your electrical appliances are killing the world' and watch everyone go out and buy new, more expensive, ozone saving appliances.
