Blackburn Market has been going downhill for many years.
Rising rents and mismanagement (Too many chiefs and not enough Indians)
Butchers,Fishmongers,Greengrocers and many other good local produce retailers have gone. These people are the lifeblood of the market and when they go other traders will suffer.
Blackburn as with Darwen, Accrington, Clitheroe along with other small markets in the area are all council controlled and in the main used as a political football between the ruling councilors and the wanabees.
All these markets are supposed to earn money for the council and that is the primary objective, but,the cost of running these markets, because of interference from people who could not do a business plan for a wheelbarrow, puts the markets in decline.
Sell the franchise to a private market operator with a stipulation that market rents only rise with the cost of inflation, let the traders sell what they want. (Supermarkets do) Competition will find its own level.
I could go on but I guess you get my drift.
