Re: school uniform.......
I went to Paddock House in 1954. At the time there was only 1 tailor for the school, J.B.Smith of Union Rd., and you had no choice.
I can remember going to be measured, then fitted, for 2 navy blue pinafore dresses, 2 cream shirts, a cardigan, tie, navy blue overcoat and velour hat. The dresses, shirts and coats were all hand stitched and the bill was enormous.
When we went into the 3rd form we had to have brown coats, again hand stitched, and those dreadful mortar-boards. We also had a totally different Summer uniform of blue and white striped dresses, navy blazers (yep, hand stitched) and panama hats. Even the PE clothes were "unique", blue aertex shirt and brown pleated cullottes, and we had to have hockey sticks, pads and boots, plimsolls and tennis rackets.
Over the years my mother paid a fortune to have me looking absolutely awful. Just be thankful things have changed as much as they have.
