Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?

The actual quotation comes from Sir Walter Scott's "Marmion", dated 1808. The line goes:
"Charge, Chester, charge, on Stanley on!"
It was adopted as a sort of Stanley battle-cry in the 1950s and was then immortalised in the song, written for Stanley, the first line of which was
"On Stanley on, lads, on Stanley on!" and which has been quoted many times, both correctly and incorrectly on this messageboard. Somewhere in my loft I believe I have a taped copy of the song which was re-released to coincide with Stanley's great cup run in the early nineties which ended at Ewood Park against Crewe.
"Mary's Music" on (I think!) Abbey Street or the bottom of Whalley Road(prop. Mary Mortimer, wife of Joe from Mort's dance hall), did a roaring trade selling copies of it to sad but nostalgic old Peel Park-ites like myself.
