This was all in the news in Australia last year when we were there. The fella's release date was looming and they were discussing sending him back here then.
Australian citizenship is not automatically given, no matter how long you've lived there, it has to be applied for. This chap has never applied for citizenship so is therefore still a British citizen

As a returning citizen, he technically isn't allowed any benefits or free healthcare etc until he has paid into the system. When my brother came back from NZ, he was entitled to nowt and had only been away for 5 years. If this guy gets handouts I'll be really annoyed (along with the rest of the population).
