The issue is that we are still finding huge amounts of oil all over the world (antarica is one place that is only just being explolred in any real amount). we have no real idea how long its going to last but I would be happy to say its got more than 20 years worth left.

There is also the train of thought that if we are going to use it up anyway we will need to find a solution other ways so lets just get on with that now. solar is one form that quite simply doesn't and will never get the amount of investment untill we are in real danger of having no oil. similarly wind power technology is in its infancy. give teh technology time to improve and become more efficent and I genuinely thing we will see solar and wind harnesses on teh majority of houses. Its a simple matter then of teh electrical innovations making cars etc that can run from this energy.

We(humans) are extremely resourceful things and teh advances in science and technology over just the last 50 or 60 years alone tells me that in ~200 years they will be looking back wondering what all the fuss was about.

The tax on fuel has nothing to do with 'making it last longer' or any other environmental issue. it is purely to prop up this white elephant of a goverment who are spending like imelda marcos in a shoe shop.
