I can't really offer any advice, just sympathy.
If someone's home has to be sold to pay for residential care, they do let you keep £22,250. (That's the most up to date figure I can find, until recently it was only £16,000 worth of equity/savings you could keep.)
What makes it even more unfair is that British citizens who live north of Hadrian's Wall, get free care, and aren't forced to sell their homes to fund it.
