Not even with HTML - the threat with this particular spam is contained within an attached ZIP file, which is not opened during the preview or regular view of an email. You have to open the attachment as a separate event.

HTML emails aren't that much of a threat as long as you take some small steps to protect yourself. Disabling scripting will prevent them from running most malicious code on your PC. Disabling the display of non-embedded images might protect you from increased spam. (The way it works is each image in the mail is linked as an ostensibly unique file on a server somewhere in the world. When it logs that that image has been accessed, it "knows" your email address is a live, spammable one.) Keeping your email client, windows system and antivirus software up-to-date is essential.
