Following my last one, back to good ole Slim (Otis Dewey Whitman Jr. to give him his full name).
This song was no. 1 in the UK charts for 11 weeks in 1955 and that record wasn't beaten until 1991 when Bryan Adams had 16 weeks at the top with "Everything I Do". Slim was more popular over here than in the USA and he topped the Royal Variety Performance several times (Princess Margaret, apparently, was a big fan). A good looking bloke when he was young, I certainly thought so, and I think his voice was unique. He's 84 now but I think he's still singing.
Incidentally he opened Dawson's, a music shop that sells everything from pianos to sheet music, in Warrington, in 1957 and the streets were jam-packed with fans. They had to close the town centre.
