Prediction League – Game 8; v Port Vale (away)
A Micky Adams clear-out over the close season saw 9 players depart (including Joe Anyon, their keeper – as in “we put 3 past you last Friday night” ) and just 4 arrive – midfielder pairing Lewis Haldane and Sean Rigg from Bristol Rovers, goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson from Barrow, and striker Justin Richards from Cheltenham who – with his namesake Marc Richards - is expected to form a strike partnership “which should be the envy of many” (quote from their website!). Justin Richards has an impressive 12 clubs behind him before the Valiants, and fast approaches 30, but he knocked in 15 last year for Cheltenham and 18 the year before for Kidderminster. Between them, the two Richards’ have already got a total of 11 goals this season (7 in the League) – Marc having 6 to Justin’s 5. Sean and Phil will need to be alert …….in fact, two lerts
Two seasons ago we did the double over them – 2-0 away (Craney and Mullin) in August and the same again at home on a March Tuesday (Proccie and Ryan getting the goals in the first half hour). Last year we got a decent point away (again a midweek game) 2-2, but lost at home (as part of The Great Slide in March and April) 2-1, our 6th defeat in 7 (it got worse) – Bobby Grant getting our goal.
They’re going well so far – currently lying 2nd to Shrewsbury (on goals scored only), having won 5 and drawn 1 of their 7 League games; they’re still in the JPT (away to Carlisle next), but out of the Carling, getting a terrible drubbing (6-0) by Fulham (I seem to remember that we’ve got a decent record against Fulham?) At home in the League they’ve beaten Aldershot 1-0, drawn with Chesterfield (1-1) and lost to Torquay (1-2); they’ve won all four of their away League games, with a goals difference of 8 (scored 9, conceded 1). Last year they ended up 10th on 68 points, scoring 61 and conceding 50; we scored 62 and conceded 74, ending up (after The Great Slide) with 61 points, in 15th place.
The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3pm on Saturday 25th September. Will the stingiest defence in League 2 do it again? Will Sean get another 3? Terry get another 2? Anybody score for the first time this season / ever? Bavs from the penalty spot in the 94th minute? Your guess! Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!
