Never really been explained where the original family money came from either (before Cora's inheritance saved the estate) - presumably from the Industrial Rev...or maybe just landed gentry. Plenty of scope for other storylines I think -Fellowes is beavering away on them as we speak! Let's hope he comes up with something good.

Upstairs the elderly Earl and his lithesome Filipino companion.
Downstairs deserted, except for the old couple who act as char and gardener.
