Re: Today in pictures
I have lived in this area for all of my life and have never been inside.
I was once part of a group of nurses that were going to sing Christmas Carols in the cathedral(this would be around the latter part of the seventies) but it was a time when the wards were very busy and my duty rota was changed so that I could no be part of the group.
I have been meaning to go an visit, but not got around to it.....your pictures have spurred me on....thank you

Re: Today in pictures
I must admit I only went for the first time last year, despite living just around the corner from it for 8-9 years.....

Re: Today in pictures
the interior of Whalley Parish Church. It's the first time I've ever been inside as it's normally been closed...

Makes them seem even bigger than they may be! Or are they such gigantic structures?

There are pretty massive, apparently the amount of electricity generated governs the size, I guess these were around several hundred feet tall

Re: Today in pictures
It is a great picture, but if I am honest I hate the sight of these monstrosities.
They are a blight on the landscape, this would be tolerable if they were efficient, but they aren't.

Re: Today in pictures
Just out of interest....the blades of these monsters are manufactured on the Isle of Wight on the site that used to produce hovercrafts.
I saw barges ferrying them across the Solent from Cowes to Plymouth(I think).

Yes, by a Danish-owned company (I think). Used to work with someone whose husband works there. Probably it was Portsmouth rather than Plymouth?

Re: Today in pictures
Yes you are right...it was Portsmouth(I get those place mixed up)...I think the blades I saw being shifted were marked Volvo(it surprised me)...but I could be wrong....not sure if it is a subsidiary of the car maker.

The car maker was sold to Ford a few years ago, they in turn sold it to the Chinese (cannot remember the alphabet soup) who so far as I know still own it.

To be honest I don't mind them and they are no more a blight on the landscape than electricity pylons you find everywhere... I took some photographs of St James' Church at Altham and had to spend 45 minutes removing the wires from the shot. The turbines are at least photogenic under the right circumstances....

The more I think about it, the more sure I am that they were marked up as Volvo.
I was looking for a picture, because I am pretty sure I took one, but I can't lay my hand on one.
