Brief Encounter
Just watching a recording of Brief Encounter, a so-called classic film starring Trevor Howard. All I can say is I've had painful bowel movements that are far more entertaining than this load of bilge. And I bet Barry Norman never said that in all his film reviews.

Re: Brief Encounter
I thought it was just me being a philistine.
I have seen the film, and could not understand why it was seen as a great film, a classic.
To me it was just a mediocre black and white film.

Indeed I've been unfortunate to watch it twice, once having paid at a cinema, the second time, it was put on as a Christmas classic! I've had some lousy Christmas movies to watch through, that must be the most miserable worst.

Re: Brief Encounter
I love the way the Doctor, a chest specialist, chain smokes his way through the film, brilliant

Re: Brief Encounter
Being a lover of what we used to call 'the black and whites' I used to find it a little to clip English, but over the years and particularly with the new Blu-Ray issue in such high quality detail its a nostalgic watch.
David Lean was of course an accomplished film director and a screen play based around Noel Cowards Still Life all set 1938 with much of the film being shot at Carnforth Stn in blackout conditions during 1945. In some movie reference books its rating is well up there with the likes of 'Attack of the killer tomatoes' but in film circles it is regarded at a classic of British cinema.
Stockport Plaza Super Cinema have a annual screening of it which is packed each year also possibly due to the art deco restaurant where you can enjoy afternoon tea 40's style with some people also going in costume. Fair to say then its at its best shown on a big screen where you can get the full impact and detail of the locations perhaps.
Happy days!
Talking about Tomatoes they are showing THE BLOB Steve MCQueen in October if you like the old drive in movies http://stockportplaza.co.uk

Re: Brief Encounter
The music was the best bit of the film. I love that piece.

I don't trust people who tell me what I should think of something. I am able to decide for myself if something is to my tatse or not.
Most of the stuff that we are told is 'good' these days, I find to be far less than good and in many cases it is dire.
I might have some grey in my hair, but I have not yet lost the power of critical thought.
