No. I have the feeling im treading on thin ice as it is!!

For fun I would say maybe - youthfully challenged. Kind of has two meanings I suppose.

I get called 'grumps' and 'harbinger of doom' but I am an optimist really.
The persona projected here is not neccessarily the whole true personality.

PS - I am not a Norah Batty lookalikie

I'd be more than happy to debate whether graffiti, as examplified most notably Jean-Michel Basquiat, and of late by the Bristol public school art terrorist Banksy, is a continuation of the idea that anything can be art. A philosophy first aired by Duchamp's sculpture of a urinal at a exhibition in 1917, and an idea that was further expanded by the Dadaists.

A tag is not art, in my opinion.

It has no relevance other than to the talentless person who did it.

Anyway. Shall we settle on a more pleasant term for such people? no. lets not pigeon hole people.

Sorry everyone.

And so you should be, I'm one of a few old timers that worked heir fingers to the bone to get the Youth and Community Centre on Harvey Street, about 5 years to be precise, and I'm still involved today, but sometimes I wonder why we ever bothered

And by the way. I respect the work you have done. Working with/for the kids is more often than not a thankless task and you should be applauded.

I had also noticed the recent increase in graffiti, a friend have mine has a relative whos Motorhome was "tagged" £400 repair bill.

Graffiti never seems to get removed, i know several places where "friends" (i use the term loosely as i hardly speak to them anymore and didnt like them that much in the first place) tagged in 2005, and the graffiti is still there now.

As for the subject of if graffiti is art are not that that totally depends on where it is and what it is, in my opinion anything sprayed on public or private property without permission is vandalism, however i must admit a few of banksys peices really impressed me. Aslong as its done with permission, isnt racist sexist or offensice in any other way and is more creative than "scott woz ere buzzin 2k8" then yeah it could be nominated as being art.

And just to make a point that not everyone on here is how you imagined, i'm 21 and VERY into hip-hop music. I would also regard myself as being fairly in touch with the youth of today (but truth be told i think the majority of them are a complete waste of space:rolleyes:).

I can't see it on the Observer website so I can be corrected -
If the paper has printed a photo of the tag it may well lead to the identification of the culprit, but on the other hand, other little tykes will do it for publicity/notoriety too

The only trouble is that the little tow rag will probable be walking round Ossy bragging to his mates and showing of. If they ever catch the waster, I'd make him/her go round the town and clean up all the mess he/she has made, maybe then there will be a little thought before he/she thinks about doing it again
