Rhyddings park history ??

On moving into our house a few years ago, I embarked on doing some research on the history of Rhyddings park. Found some interesting information about things in the park and their origins, Most fascinating was the house that once stood proud in the "park" which was the garden for this splendid house.Ryhddings Hall.
The picture's that excist on file in they library are wonderful to look at, the house was built for mill owner Mr Watson, and was a beautiful building, after this house was given to the council they in there wisdom used and abused it until they chose to demolish it along with part of our Beautiful heritage.
I will not dribble on at length about the many things you can find in your local library given TIME..

But I did wonder if anyone else had done any research into this bit of history????? Because one thing I have tried to find out about without results is the fact that Rhyddings hall was built on the site of what was described as " Rhyddings old hall" which made my mind wander as to what this was?? But can not find any information on this.... Can anyone else help???

Thank's Atarah :) Not seen that pic before.....The left side of the building as we see it in this picture, Just out of sight was a wonderful large "Conservatory" on the side..

The house was also owned by the Bulough family around the turn of the century.

It's tragic that we had so many fine buildings which are now lost.

Re: Rhyddings park history ??

Very interesting Simon...I don't know how I missed this thread for so long.

It seems strage that the "new" Rhyddings Hall should be built on the site of the "old" Rhyddings Hall. Now just what was that and when was it built. I haven't seen any old maps of Ossy, but there must be some, somewhere.

Funny isn't it that something that happened only a 150 years or so ago, is now lost. I wish I could go into the Library and have a look myself. Is Ossy library still open?

simon 20-10-2004 13:36

Re: Rhyddings park history ??

Hi Darby, Yes Ossy library is open and that was my first port of call for research a while ago. But they told me such history is at Accrington library, which is where I spent a while looking into it :)

One photo I saw showed people queing up to enter the newly opened Rhydding's park in 1910 ish, To see how everybody dressed up for the occasion (despite poverty) was fascinating. Pride it was called ;) .

When I get time to find any old pic's again I will scan them and let you all have a look.

Rhyddings park history

The earliest mention I can find of Rhyddings is this - it was formerly the home of the Riddings family. It was certainly there in the 1500's. This old hall was pulled down in 1853 by Mr Robert Watson and he erected Rhyddings Hall in 1854 - the estate was very extensive, the entrance to the grounds beginning at Rhyddings Mill (erected 1856). The hall was occupied by the Bullough family for a time, but in 1910 the hall and grounds were purchased by the District Council for a public park. Most of the pictures in the gallery were given to the Council by the late John Bradley, of St Annes, who was of an old Oswaldtwistle family. One of the paintings in the gallery is one by Cattermole of an old English homestead in the 17th century. (have a feeling this may be up Haworth Art Gallery!)

The old tower left in the grounds (I am assuming this is still there????) is said to have been a portion of old Rhyddings Hall.

Re: Rhyddings park history ??

Thank's a lot Atarah, very interesting. yes the tower is still there but if left to decay much more and HBC will be pulling it down for HEALTH and SAFETY :(

Where do you find your info Atarah ?? Or is that a secret:)

Yes the "old tower is still there, but now in a poor state of repair as are most areas of the park, the only thing thats in good condition is "the new childrens play area" but I'm sure that will soon be damaged

What you call the 'old tower' was in fact a folly built around 1870, and has no connection with the old Hall except the stone may have been reused. lt was in fact built to look like that and is relatively unscathed, and hasn't unlike other parts of the park fallen into a state of disrepair.

To anybody that might be interested in Rhyddings Park, l gave the guy that runs the ossygobbin pic site, some pictures we had of the park. There is one of my Grandpa with my Dad in the Park [1942] showing the old railings and the houses on Park Lane behind. Depending where you live your house could be on. Also a different pic we had of Hargreaves opening the Park which l don't think is on yet.
To access the new pics click on box marked updated photos.

Ah, thank you I've found it, very interesting, the railings I think are on top of the existing park wall, all the houses on park lane had railings, but as with a lot more they were removed to help the war effort. What is interesting is what I think is a lighting column/post in the park, when we moved on the lane the street lighting was via short columns actually in the park, could have been the same ones. The photo is taken near the middle of the lane, wonder who lives in those houses now? Would have downloaded the photo, but Mike seems to have stopped the right click bit, don't blame him cause I think a lot of his photos have been copied.
It is sad that the park is no longer what it was, just think if the "hall" and the ornate gardens had been preserved, but that was not to be. All I see is the lass that works in the park picking up all the empty cans, bottles and litter each morning.
HBC did apply for a lottery grant in 1996 to try to restore the park, but nothing came of it.

I do apologise Garinda. It never occured to me that you would object to the names being mentioned on here as you yourself had directed people to look at the photograph and the names were there large as life for all to see in the comment underneath, and the fact that you had posted the name Ernest Martin in full.

I shall edit my post and then if Park381 edits my quote in his they will not appear here at least but in order to prevent any possible future repetition perhaps you'd better ask for the names to be removed from the original website.

Unfortunately once something is on the net it's there for all the world to see and actually drawing people's attention to it gives the impression that you have no problems with the content.

It looks like you have a lot of history of rhyddings park, but the history i remember is when i used to live at the top end of Rhyddings st, 30+yrs ago it was a main attraction for famileys, in the summer you could go there and they would be bands playing in the bandstand, punch a judy shows going on, entertainment etc. The main field used to be packed, the bowling greens used were always packed, you had to wait your turn, and the swing park, well you used to be lucky to get on. Shame you didnt live there then, its sad to see the park so quite now, and im sure folk from ossy would agree

Could be from some of the younger residents, but I think the older end would think they had stepped back in time, and would sit on the front as they used to do to listen to the bands :D

No the people on Fielding Lane are all chilled out each and everyone. You may get a few from the Park Laners, particularly the ones that complained that seeing/hearing children playing on the swings would ruin their lives.:D

John Bradley was the son of Clayton Bradley, an early registrar in Church. The family name was originally Broadley but this branch became Bradley in the 1750s.

I am looking for photos of the "bandstand" that used to be in Rhyddings Park, but was burnt down by vandals.
Can anyone help?
