Gobbinlanders disco in the 70's.

Does any one remember Gobbinlander's disco? lt was on the next block up from the old co-op, & ran from about 1971-74. lt was owned by my dad & his friend tony perkins [ who is still in business as a butcher in ossy.] On the same block @ the same time, my mum had a cafe, & also our family bakery. On the 1st night the disco opened ** which was only selling pop & crisps] there was a riot as so many people turned up, sinks were pulled off the walls & the police came to disperse the people that couldn' t get in!

Tony's my Godfather, & still makes the best sausages in Ossy- thinking about it he's the only butcher left since Farnworth's closed. Between them Tony & my Dad had the sausage & meat pie & teenie glam- rock disco business sewn up!

I'll ask Tony on Friday.

He isn't the only butcher, there is one up past the Co-Op but can't remember the name. But he does have the best sausages.

Of course keep it in the family! Were you in the scouts Pendy @ the same time as Tony, [& my Dad?] lf you 're the same age,l know who you are unless you've got brothers, or weren't in the scouts in the late 50's early 60's. Don t pull the pansies out of my window boxes when Tony tells you what a delghtful person l am! lol
P.S Don't ask him about his Uncle Jack Killier he was in the navy!!!!!!! lol

the only butcher left since Farnworth's closed.

Would this be George Farnworth who used to have a butchers shop in West End? I knew him when meat was rationed and a pound of scrag-end had to last a week. :D

Re: Gobbinlanders disco in the 70's.

It was George Farnworth, he was the father then his son took over. l don't know where they were before the corner of Trinity street. It's been sold to turn into flats, the prices of dwellings obviously outstrips the need for shops in Ossy. I blame Thatcher & Buy-the-House! [Also for the lack of non-rationed scrag end!!]

Re: Gobbinlanders disco in the 70's.

There is another butchers @ the other end of the block to The Royal Oak! OMG, l owe Pendy a fish supper! He's called John Whittaker, & supplies my brother's shop everyday! l feel a bit of a teacake now, after elevating Tony Perkins to the title of Ossy's only butcher! lol.

garinda 24-02-2005 14:15

Ossy web site found in butchers!

Went to Tony Perkin's for a chop for tea, & to warn him he may be asked some strange questions. It was weired though, before I said anything he started talking about Gobbinlanders and someone who was connected with it [the dj?] now has a website full of photos about Ossy. You may already know about it, but for those that don't it's at http:/ossygobbin2003.fotopic.net it has over 800 pics both past & present. It's strange no one remembers the disco, the people who went to it I suppose would be in their late 40's-50's now, they can't all of emmigrated to Blackburn!

Afraid I was one of the Ossy discoers, is that a word?, I remember them starting in different places, maybe the brains a gone a bit but to much barley wine and the odd spliff may have taken a few cells.

At last someone who remembers going there, [or who'll admit to it.] l was only about six or seven, but remember it was painted black in side & had a big psychedelic painting in day-glo paint, of Marc Bolan on one wall. lt also had a stage were local bands used to play sometimes.
