BT Broadband

I'm on Option 3. I've just got the hub phone today. I'm not a techie, I don't understand half of it but if I'm paying for it I want to use it to the best of it's capabilities.

Right for starters, why does it have to run on 2 different telephone numbers? Does this other telephone line only give me access to the free evening and weekend calls?

What is Softphone? Would Ibe likely to use it as just a normal home broadband user? Is it like Skype?

Also, I think I'm getting a laptop for Christmas, the hub is wireless enabled, how easy/hard is it going to be to get it to work with the hub?

Got loads more questions but that will do for now

Thanks for any help :)

Re: BT Broadband

Not on BT for ADSL but I would guess its a VOIP service so your 'second' number is a virtual number that is purely for VOIP incoming calls.

Wireless is a piece of cake, at worst you pm your friendly local techie and he'll pop round and set it up for you in minutes.(the issue with networks is that people don't (want to) understand them so it confuses them, once you understand them they are very easy to work with)

Yes VOIP service rings a bell. It juse seems funny that they have given me yet another phone just to make free evening and weekend calls. I just assumed there must be more to it than that.

If he's a contractor it's because he is extra special at his job and can command top rates. :)

Sorry if I appear a little off with this comment but why have you bought something that you don't know what it does?

You will now have 2 phone numbers. Your old BT number and your your new VOIP number. Why you need 2 is because BT has not pulled its finger out and sorted out porting landline numbers to VOIP providers. This is because they are a set of laxy *****. I think the real reason is that they would loose a lot of customers. After all for £7.99 +VAT a month I can make unlimited calls to landlines within the UK and several other countries 24 hours a day using my Vonage VOIP service. I am only using BT to provide my Pipex broadband and old incoming phone line. I intend to move to NTL for broadband soon. I will still have to pay BT £9.99 a month just to keep my old phone number as I cant port it to Vonage. I can port it to NTL so why not Vonage. As soon as I can port my old number to Vonage BT will loose me altogether and my only phone connection will be VOIP over an NTL broadband connection. So you can see why BT are being a little slow.

Rant over, back to your phones :)

You can phone from and receive calls on either. You need to find out what you pay for on each phone line so you can work out which to use when and even if you will be saving money or not. You can also make or receive 2 calls at once because you have in effect 2 phone lines.

Orange also have the same system, you plug a phone in to the Livebox they supply and it's an extra line. Despite the hassle factor it's a good idea to learn the number and provide it to any business you have to deal with, that way you know not to answer the phone on that line :D

hi, well iv'e come off b/t broadband & option 3 & gone on talk talk free broadband phone calls the lot for £20-99p Google Page Ranking month ....saving me £65 Google Page Ranking month....yes i was screaming for 2 weeks when i first went on talk talk but now im very happy ...plus my belkin wirless router connects to my susans too.

accymel 02-12-2006 18:12

Re: BT Broadband

Well well a complaint has gone direct to bt by me, just rang with regards to tinks' query above, a] dont understand the 2 numbers jobber, b] im on option 2 altho i can use this broadband talk to get the phone that goes with the hub as in the adverts i have to pay £50  which if i paid an extra £4 a month for option 3 i would get the hub phone for free - which i think personally is a huge rip off to get people paying over the odds for download limits that they may not even use!!!! Well the lady i spoke to wasn't forth coming with explanations as to what i actually do get but insisted that the broadband talk is a free service [ermmmm only eves & weekends for a set period & will charge fee - so not free really] All this is this is a load of bullcrap to get people to go & pay full whack as far as i can see!!

Well this woman couldn't explain to me what i get or answer reasons for having 2 no's - the silly woman told me when i said the parlarvor of switching phones over that i could lose calls on my landline etc she said well give em all my new one so i wont need to have calls on my landline----- doh!! stupid woman!! & the best of it was when i asked her to explain the option 2 benefits she hung up or cut me off!!!! so i havve just submitted a complaint by mail to BT - so exactly a great customer service really, usually they will warn u if u are being abusives or difficult that to calm down or we'll hang up - BUT i wasn't even being abusive i only raised my tone slightly cos she was confusing me more & not being helpful at all & im proud that i watched my launguage - so cant understand why she cut me off - how rude!!!

accymel 04-12-2006 21:16

Re: BT Broadband

Even more confused now hehehehehehe, bt got back to me explained that the BB talk will work with ordinary house phones - which it does but when someone rang my landline - both phones rang  yet my bb talk has a different no & connected to hub. Now why do i need 2 phones then if it rings regardless ?????

The joys of BT :D. To make it worse they will now try and rip you off for watching TV over your broadband. On their website it says you need BT Total Broadband to get it.

MM tell me about it mind u cant get worse than sky for ripping u off either, but bt can sod off till its free connection - not paying £90 for it, i told them off earlier for being too mis-leading & over dramatising their ads & the confusing website with the crappy small print lol:(

Tinkerbelle 04-12-2006 22:50

Re: BT Broadband

I heard something about it on the news this morning but as soon as anything techie is mentioned I start day dreaming about .... flowers ... rainbows ... fluffy pink pillows :D

Got Sky, so I can't see me wanting Bt TV (it has a ring to it though ;) )

They sent an advert offering a mobile too, I think it said free for the first 6 month then £42 from the 7th month onwards ....... I just said HOW MUCH!! Then binned it. Extortionate and no were near the tariff I get now

EDIT: I recycled it not binned it ;)
