Is Facebook affecting forums?

As this seems to be our busiest local forum I thought I would ask on here too. Is Facebook and other social networking sites affecting forum based sites.

I'm a member on a few forums around the web, some niche, and quite a few seem affected by people instead choosing to mooch around on Facebook. Our local site seems to be affected by it with many of our regular members now using Facebook more frequently than popping on our forums.

Personally I use both, but rarely use Facebook 'groups', I just think they are a poor persons forums and difficult to follow.

Re: Is Facebook affecting forums?

Not sure if it's affecting them or not. I normally come on here for discussions and use Facebook to talk to people individually. In other words I rarely send PMs on Accringtonweb.

You're right about Facebook groups. I sometimes join them and say something, but I rarely go back to them or take any further part in them for the reasons you mention.

I agree with you LYNX1, I joined but could'nt see what it was about, then a week later I started to get emails people wanting to be my friend, Why would any one want to be my friend, especially if they don't know me, so I deleted the emails and my log in code and haven't been back since.

I only have family on it, and chat with them sometimes.
I couldn't cope with all those 'extras' like zoos and gardens.
Garinda kidnapped me a couple of times so I sent him a few dog turds.
It got too messy, so if you were on my friends list and found yourself deleted - it was nothing personal.

Maxres maximum respect for British armed forces!

Login | Facebook

This started off saying it was about to start a charity with a paypals account to pay into, some asked for more, some said we have asked the charity Commission about you and they have had nothing from you.

Now all talk of a charity, one that would be there only to pay money into existing charities, has gone and some still believe it is genuine?

It needs reading to understand it better.

Agree with Cashman and Jaysay. I went on Facebook once and within an hour all my students wanted to be my friend! (can't think of anything worse) Also I was terribly tempted to check out what my kids were doing, which isn't right, is it?
Once I saw my nephew Kevin (from Ossie )on Facebook but the Ossie dialect and 'choice ' language! was a bit too much for me.
Much prefer this site especially when Cashman talks posh!!

Don't know what to do !

Just had a suggestion from one of my 'friends' to invite a certain member beginning with 'L' and ending with 'ess' to invite him to become my friend.

Decisions, decisions. http://planetsmilies.net/confused-smiley-17430.gif

Also had a look at Facebook, lots of Lads & Lasses from Old units are on but I really wasn't to keen from a security aspect, plus the thought of Hundreds of people I'd never heard of wanting to be my friend...WHY ? So gave it a wide berth & anyway I'd sooner "Converse" with lots of strange Folk on here :D

You dont have to sign up with your real name you know.

You can join facebook under a pseudonym and as long as you do not say anything too personal on there your fine.
Use another email address than your normal one too, on an account with a limited address book.

So I'm told. :-)

Lyn 26-04-2010 10:24

Re: Is Facebook affecting forums?

sort of defeats the object though doesnt it as surely you would be billy no mates if you dont use your real name?

mattylad 26-04-2010 11:22

Re: Is Facebook affecting forums?

Why?

You can easily find other people & join them, tell them who you really are in private.

It is the use of your real name on facebook & forums that leaves people liable to ID theft.

My real name is not really Matty Lad, but its good enough for the forums & for me to be known by, just not enough for someone to steal my ID.

I find it OK if you are very selective -unless a known friend actually suggests someone to you just Ignore the request - Basic common sense, if you don't want to be friends with someone, then don't, just like real life.

Sod all these pen names, if you can't admit to who you are, what have you got to hide - and who from?

I can't do with facebook at all.
I find it phony...all these folk want to be your friend, without knowing anything about you. Heck, you could be an axe murderer for all they know.
I have had a few invites and they wind me up no end.
I mean why would you be on Facebook? Really, why would you??

sm_counsell 27-04-2010 17:35

Re: Is Facebook affecting forums?

I've gone on it again because my brother in Ossie seems to be able to manage it better than e mails.
As Barrie says , just ignore all the strangers who want to be your friend.
I put on my profile that I'd use Facebook just for my friends in the Uk and a few other places, and so far, no problems. (Must admit , I hardly ever write anything!)
Still prefer this forum though.

Funny enough Margaret, I've just had an EMail this morning saying that some one I've never heard as sent a friendship request, I probably only go on FB once a week, if that, its just boring to me, Such-a-body says they're having a bad day, not as bad as I am:rolleyes:

I use facebook, the main reason is, i have family near Portsmouth, friends (proper friends) in London, Eastbourne and Oldham as well as family in Accrington. The friends and family outside of Accrington would not go on here as they have no interest in what is happening in Accy, facebook is my best way of communicating with a few people all at the same time.

Re: Is Facebook affecting forums?

No, it doesn't.......but I just don't like facebook...if I wanted to do that I probably would use yahoo, or even MSN.

My problem with rellies is that because of time zones there is only a narrow window in which to chat......and they work unsocial hours,(police/Nurses) so often the time when they could chat, they are asleep....and when we are awake, they are at work. C'est la Vie.
