Re: Broadband Speeds
Tried both.
1st one Download 6724-Kb/s Upload 375-kb's 2nd one Download 5851-Kb/s Upload 386-Kb/s Ping 44 So which is giving a true reading, I've notice a lot of difference when downloading documents, depending on the size of the doc, and what is on it. Retlaw |
Re: Broadband Speeds
Tubbyless - Download 10663 KBiTs, Upload 872 Kbits, Ping 44 Ms, Connections 2202. on royboys done just after Download 7736, Upload 809, aint a clue what it means n like retlaw seems a fair gap between em??

Re: Broadband Speeds
These ping meters always give me a good rating, but my connection speed isn't always brilliant due to weak wireless signal in the back bedroom. Might be something worth bearing in mind if your results seem skewed.
It's good that they're trying to change ruling on advertising of BB speeds. People have been campaigning for it for ages; OFCOM have finally listened. |

Re: Broadband Speeds
2nd one
Download 5851-Kb/s Upload 386-Kb/s Ping 44 Just tested with the 2nd one again and now the spoeed is Download 6787-Kb/s Upload 392-Kb/s Ping 44 So exactly what are they using to test download speed, they must have downloaded sumat, but what. Reckon its just hocuspocus. Retlaw. |
Re: Broadband Speeds
Thats what I thought when I tried mine Retlaw, does anyone know what they download?
|
Re: Broadband Speeds
If you're using a phone line(as I am) will the results vary depending on how many people are on the internet using your local exchange?
Results for two runs on speed.io a few minutes apart- Download 6840/6599 Upload 379/344 Connections/min1435 Ping 48/78 Big variation on ping??-Response time between computer and internet. Perhaps Neill(who obviously knows what it all means) can explain what they mean, what should we expect and are our results good or bad? I know we would appreciate it if you can, Neill. By the way, didn't someone once say you could rinse your keyboard if you spilt on it? Is that true?? The whiskey and dry doesn't seem to have done any harm(although the waste upset me) but will it be alright to leave it? |
Re: Broadband Speeds
Here's another for you to play with:

Mine is covered in two layers of cling film and selotape, makes it a bit harder to type, but I've had this keyboard now for nigh on 20 years. Its not a standard keyboard, it has 129 keys, and does things a standard keyboards can't. Retlaw |

Re: Broadband Speeds
All these figures are no good unless you put them against the broadband speed your paying for.

Re: Broadband Speeds
All of these speed test websites rely on there own speed to be able to cope with all the people using them at the same time. You always get variations.
I like the last one linked personally but ignore any offers like suggested. It is usually very good. |
Re: Broadband Speeds
O2 are good for speeds
IF you are close to town(exchange)... I am pretty close to it and I get 20MB Download speed. If you use usenet good test is to actually test the download and upload via usenet as those test sites are never 100% accurate I used to live in clayton on queen street, there i was getting 6MB Download speed with O2. My friend who lives close to hare and hounds is on talktalk is on 3MB... I guess talktalk put a nice big cap on speeds |

I live in Rishton we don't live in a cable street which is restricts choice. My broadband speed is typically 3mb or slower that's on Orange Home Broadband. Last night I tried to download a bbc iplayer programme it told me it would take an over an hour to download a 1 hour programme. We're a currently in our notice period we've only been with them less than a month.

Re: Broadband Speeds
Just an update-I got an 'e' mail from BT 3 weeks ago saying they were upgrading their network in my area and I should see a gradual improvement over the next 10 days.
Just run the speed test and got- Download- was 6840 on 4/3. Now 8097kb/sec. Upload- was 379 at best. Now 1048kb/sec Connections- was 1435, not changed Ping- was 48/78. Now 34. Download/ upload looks good but Ping?? So BT did something. |
Re: Broadband Speeds
hehe, if you dont quite understand what a ping is then why are you worried
you lot should be grateful, internet speeds todoy are a million miles away from what we used to have, for those who used 9.6Kbits/sec modem we remember it taking days to download stuff and I'm not talking even megabytes of data as we didn't have disks big to store it.... and gigabyte Hertz cpus? geesh that was science fiction..... |

Wireless conection is prone to 'piggybacking' and increases your exposure to EMF |

Re: Broadband Speeds
Cough, it does help to turn off the wireless if you are using ethernet margaret doesn't it! ;-)
it does surprise me how many people use technology with absolutely no idea whatsoever of how to properly set it up or secure it. yet you cant say its not common knowledge that pc/internet security is very important Ok I learned over many years but its almost unheard of particularly on forums like this where you do have techies willing to help that people say "actually I have no idea on how best to set this lot up properly, can someone help me? " |
Re: Broadband Speeds
I know that you made the effort to set me up wireless a while ago - I had to keep switching that box on the window sill on and off to get it to work - frankly it was a pain in the backside.
Since then I am on a newer desktop and got a back up laptop this year - both using ethernet |
Re: Broadband Speeds
BT emailed me last week saying they upgrading my line for broadband on Monday morning, I have to say my laptop speed seems much faster this morning
