We can't live without Facebook
Brits: Facebook is more vital than a mobile phone, shower, toilet | ZDNet
It would appear that having access to Facebook is the 5th most important thing in our lives, in fact looking at the list one has to wonder which planet some people actually live on. I have a Facebook account, but it wouldn't bother me if I didn't access it again, I'd be much more concerned if Accy Web disappeared |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
I use it to keep informed about what my family (son and five adult grandchildren) are doing. The message system is better than email.

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I have never logged on to facebook and have no intention of doing so.
I have lived 73 without out it and don't think I am missing much. I have had a couple of invitations to join from family members but declined via email and keep in touch by phone, it's much more personal to hear a voice. . |

Besides that, what they say on Facebook to their friends gives a better indication of how they are living than a phone call to gran ever would ;) |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
I use facebook but could live without it.
We have a closed group on there for family members where we all post our family photographs going back to the 1900's and share information and I think it is a great resource for that and also one for a residents association I am involved with and it's good to keep up to date with what is happening. However I spend most of my entire working hours telling students to get on with work and get of facebook and it seems that it is the most important thing in the world to them and if they didn't check in every few minutes the world would probably end. |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
I only use it rarely,to acess friends abroad, that aint from around here, i couldn't careless if it vanished tomorrow.

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I love Facebook!
As Margaret says it´s such a brilliant way to keep up to date with the family. I don´t see my lot often and phone calls are expensive to Tenerife. My son has spent some time in Australia with his family and it was lovely being able to see their photos. I´d hate to live without it! |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
I could live without Facebook; however, it is a good way to keep in touch with friends and family abroad and sharing photographs. Accyweb is more lively, although it does have more than its fair share of numpties!

Re: We can't live without Facebook
The notion of 'living without' something is misleading.
We could all 'live without' modern gadgets, but if they make living easier use them. After all the basics of survival are - ..a roof over your head ..a warm bed ..a full stomach anything extra is 'jam on the bread' :) |

Don't do the bookface/I'mspaced, thing at all, no interest whatsoever, it's enough getting involved with the loonies on here. :D (I include myself in that generalisation before anyone gets the hump :))

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I don't do facebook(and don't ever plan to)....and I am perturbed that many advertising campaigns/competions/petitions think that we all subscribe to this pernicious site.
Like you son.........I spend my time on here. I have family dotted around the world, but rely on e-mails to keep me up to date with the doings in their lives.......and that is good enough for me. If facebook disappeared tomorrow it would not make one iota of difference to my life. |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
Douglas Adams, summed it up nicely in The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy with this
"The history of every major galactic civilisation has passed through three distinct and recognisable phases: those of survival, inquiry, and sophistication. Otherwise known as the ‘How’, ‘Why’, and ‘Where’ phases. For instance, the first phase is characterised by the question: “How can we eat?” The second by the question: “Why do we eat?” And the third by the question: “Where should we have lunch?" |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
Just decided this aft. that Facebook is a wonderful thing and that it's creator is a genius.:thankya:
My youngest was on today and saw that his brother, who's in India, was on chat - he called me and my other half up (it was lunchtime) and there was Ricky live over Facebook video chat -a new option i think. So we got to "see" him for the first time in 3 weeks and he looked in great shape. It's one thing to speak on the phone -they tell you they're OK but maybe they're not -but it was such good video and sound it was like being in the same room!:) My feet still haven't touched the ground yet...and I am all in favour of Facebook being an everyday essential. :D:hothothot:D |

You can do that lots of ways, Skype being one. Skype also lets you Skype out so when I was in tenerife I was using my mobile phone on wifi (you can use a PC as well) to make skype calls to UK landlines for about 1p a minute I think it was. |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
My parents have a place in Tenerife and lots of the Brits over there use it, they find it more reliable than MSN and others for voice and video chat.
I was in a English pub near there place chatting on my mobile using Skype on the pubs free wifi to a uk landlane for about 20 minutes, the cost was just over 20p and call quality was just the same if I had been on a land line |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I sound like a sales rep but if you have a compatible three phone you get free skype to skype calls on three. They can call me on skype to my mobile from tenerife with me in the UK for free.

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I use it, i like to be able to keep in touch with my dad in ireland and see pics of my brothers and he gets to see my little ones. ive got family in america and china, plus the ones in bradford and tys family down south, its easier than ringing or emailing them all phots and them sendong them back
I also got back in touch with an old friend on facebook.....and married him in april ;-) |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I have friends and family scattered all over the globe, but I do not need facebook to keep in touch......photo's go on Flickr, you can decide who actually sees them......all other communciation is by e-mail.
I do not like facebook, and feel that my choices suit my needs. |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
Well, I'll be seeing and speaking to my son, Ricky, tomorrow morning at 11 again -can't wait. It's much cheaper than using the phone to India. Although apart from this I've never really used Facebook all that much...
Nice to hear a +ve story though like Emamum's -the wonders of technology!:D |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
Just been on to my mum, she's out in New Zealand at the mo. visiting my sister. She wondered if it was possible for us to do a 3 way video link on Facebook tomorrow with my son. It would be 11am for us, 11pm for them - anyone know if this is possible? Please advise!

Its more friendly than email because other family members can chip in and feel part of the chat, you can also lock down who can see your posts to just friends and no one else and just have a few family members as friends. |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
As a family we are scattered over many time zones, so facebook doesn't make a practical difference.......and anyway even as a family we sometimes bitch about one another :) .....No, I just don't like or trust facebook.
My e-mails are friendly anyway.:D:D |
Re: We can't live without Facebook
In fact, I would go so far as to say I loathe Facebook!

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I have just had to upgrade my Yahoo Mail........and there it is sitting like a bloated poison toad.......a button that links to Facbook.
I asked if there was any damn way I could remove it.........No, of course there isn't. Don't be silly, this insidious entity wants to be part of everything we do in life. I'm just surprised there isn't a facebook button on my bedroom ceiling! |

Re: We can't live without Facebook
I haven't tried it........but I have seen the damage it can do........and my daughter used to use it. What I have seen of it, appears shallow....facebook 'friends' you are never likely to meet........the chatter.......NO. Not for me thank you very much.
It is insidious. Lots of advertisers want you to 'like them' on it........competitions appear exclusively on it...so if you aren't on it, then you cannot enter. Petitions are on it, so again, if you aren't on you are excluded. Just my opinions, of course. Give me Accyweb any day of the week. |
