Church Traffic Lights
Looks like they have made a good job of knocking down the old building at the lights, landscaped, knee high fence, and wow.........young trees complete with steel guards. (how long will they last)
What a shame they did not do that on Blackburn road when they knocked down all those houses. What a mess as you drive in to Accrington  |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
It's a shame they couldn't have done that when they knocked down the Sacred Heart church.

Re: Church Traffic Lights

Re: Church Traffic Lights
Are you talking about the lights at the Commercial? I know it's changed completely since I lived in West End, when the route along Blackburn Rd was really the only way into Accrington, but which buildings have they knocked down? I seem to remember the old Council Offices had gone last time I drove down there. I always loved that curved building, even the Victorian public loos next door to it, and sometimes interesting architecture gets sacrificed for "improvement". So, what's gone now?

Have you any statistics that cars go through on red Park ? .. used to do that run every morning 'till I retired ... never really saw anyone doing this ... Feel they need to alter the light sequence that's all. Not enough land for a roundabout ... which would not be as safe anyway. |

You are probably also aware that Lancashire will not be doing anything about the area and several others in Hyndburn unless they do the Rapid Transport plan they think is such a good idea. It was suggested at a recent Area Council meting that Lancashire are trying to black mail the residents of Hyndburn to accept this bus route even though it brings with it many unwanted things like reduced parking outside shops in Union road and outside residents houses in Ossy and Clayton as well as other areas. As for solving the problem of cars going through on red I would expect a Policeman or two could solve that. |

Re: Church Traffic Lights
It was decided last year about the double roundabout scheme. They are supposed to be starting work on it around March iirc.

Oh, thanks Bernie. I got a shock last time I was in that area but I think I'd be totally lost now. Church Con Club, a red-brick building as I remember (I used to go to dances there in the 50s), was reasonably close to the traffic lights. Has that gone? I believe my mother's old home, Church Railway Station House, no longer exists and the station is now just platforms. |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
Church Con is still there altho' it is now a car spares/bike shop!

Anyone seen any plans of these that roundabouts could explain a bit more |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
Yes, got summat through the door. They are replacing both sets of lights with a roundabout at each junction. There will be puffin crossings across each road about 30 metres back. The small bit of dual carriage will remain between the roundabouts.
Will try and dig up the plans at LCC website. |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
I would have thought big roundabouts would be needed to help the traffic flow. I can see lots of bumps happening if they do build them.

Looks like the LCC site is having a funny do! Will try again tomorrow.
They weren't mini's Neil, from what I remember they are about 5 metres in diameter. |

They want to remove parking for 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon along Union Road so the buses will move faster. I can only see 2 parking spaces that actually cause a problem along Union Road for the buses. What really happens is that the bus stops so all the cars behind them have to stop. The bus sets off so do the cars. How removing the parking will make buses move faster is very questionable. Do these road planners actually look at what is going on??? |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
Cars don't just park on the pavement down Blackburn road they drive down it too:eek:
The other day i was walking to the bus stop and a car turned out of a side street (China st) onto the pavement and came past the bus stop she was going to the laundrette which is just passed the bus stop i carried on walking and made her stop but she rolled down her window and started shouting at ME to get out the way. unfortunately the bus was coming so i could not stop and argue but will next time  |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
its about time they did something with the Commercial, its a horrible site as you come into and go out of Church

Re: Church Traffic Lights
Creating more off road parking was a general comment not specific to union road, there are far worse roads than that, look at Blackburn road at West End its now just like a single track road with cars parked on both sides of the road
|
Re: Church Traffic Lights
I think they want to make parts of Blackburn Road at West End no parking as well - what the residents are supposed to do with their cars is any ones guess
|
Re: Church Traffic Lights
That problem is that the powers that be at County Hall get these brain waves (and I use brain in very loose terms) and they just plough on regardless, its always the case "We know Best and you'll do as you're told". The only thing is the people putting these schemes forward are never affected by the implementation, things like parking in front of homes or local shop doesn't disrupt their lives at all, so why should they bother

Re: Church Traffic Lights
So as most of the properties on B'burn Road, West End have front gardens why don't LCC pay to convert those into a bay for each house? Or even the back yard/garden? I know some will say that's not fair but it is a solution of sorts.
I may be wrong but won't people's insurance go down if they have off-road parking? |

Re: Church Traffic Lights
I recall reading about some proposal to restrict paving or concreting over gardens because it causes more rainwater to go into drains and so increases risk of flooding

Were the two roundabouts not part of the Pennine Reach proposal Phil ?
Don't know whether has been taken out separately ? |

Would you have thought it such a good idea if I had suggested taking away the garden fronts from the houses on park lane so the road would be wide enough for the cars to park when you lived here? |
Re: Church Traffic Lights
Quite right Katex it was Pennine Reach.
Found THIS on LCC website. you need to scroll down to page 45/49 to the pages titled Church Gateway and will need Adobe Acrobat. |
