You might get a better response if you say why you want the information

Re: The Stag Inn

I don't think that would need to be relevent at all.

There will be photos in the library. In there too are lots of trades directories. Go through them to work out roughly when it closed. You would need to find the Observer reports of the annual Brewster sessions to ascertain when it's licence was lost/forfeited. I have forgotten the dates, but there have been years when several pubs forfeited their licence because there was compensation offered

It might not be relevant but it would be polite, and people respond better to friendly gestures.:)

So giving you the benefit of the doubt that you will be a little more amiable, might I suggest you do a search of AccyWeb?
The Stag has been mentioned (including it's history) in many threads.
:alright:

:alright:

also can I point you to the gallery where you will find photos of the stag :)

we also have an introduction section to the site where members say hello and give a bit of info about themselves
they normally go to this section as its more polite to introduce yourself Before asking members for info and help

Hope you do something decent with it, but almost anything is better than a boarded up building. Can't help you with it's history though.

Haven't got any definite plans yet, but it won't be reopening as a pub. Thanks for the best wishes.

I heard there was a (not so) secret tunnel in the cellar, can you confirm this Kaysyd?
Good luck with the new business (poundshop/cash generator?) :D

Ive done a (minor) search and believe MargaretR mentioned (there may be) a tunnel from the stag inn to the dunk but nobody got back to her though....

...Hopefully Kaysyd can confirm the tunnel for us :)

Re: The Stag Inn

I don't remember seeing any tunnel. I'll have another check tonight an let you know.

A member on this forum, Staggeringman, was a former landlord. He hasn't posted here in a long time but might respond if his private message setting allows him to be notified of a message by email.

Gotta' question, Why would you need a tunnel connecting the Dunc' to an ale house? AccyX

The Stag was originally the hunting lodge for the Dunk estate

It's possible that Margaret is thinking of the Stag Inn in Henry St, Church rather than the one in Bank St, Acc. but even then I cannot let her comment go unchallenged

Tunnels come under the category of 'myths' Not one has been properly surveyed , photographed and documented.

Re: The Stag Inn

I have just checked on Google Maps. The, now short, stretch of street in front of the Stag Inn at Church is named Bank St.

I am not aware that there is any other Stag Inn in Hyndburn (Cashy will know ;))

I'm with you on this Margaret, always knew the Stag in Church was on Bank St, and me too don't remember a pub of that name on Bank Street Accy and it was on my route as spotty kid down from Woodnook to the bus station to catch the bus to Accy Tech in the 50s/ 60's. Possibly it existed before then but I think not.

And I'm with you too Gordon on the urban myths prevalent in most towns about tunnels. The Abbey was reputed to have a tunnel going all the way to Whalley Abbey, now that would have been a major engineering feat. More credence to a tunnel between the Abbey alehouse and the Grange up on Abbey Street but it's never been verified.

A trip to the reference library Friday beckons I think. :D

Doh..... a senior moment.
Not Gordon on the myths of tunnels.

I stand corrected. Whilst there were several pubs in Bank St, Acc, the Stag wasn't one of them. Bank St , Church is just off Henry St and the Stag was in it.

Re: The Stag Inn

To confirm, there is no sight of any tunnel existing in the cellar. But maybe it was bricked in the past.
