Here are another couple. One shows the "five arches" at Baxenden with an engine going over the viaduct. The signal box is on the left of the picture. The next one shows a train making the steep climb from Woodnook to Baxenden but I don't know exactly which part of the hill the photograph is taken. I don't recognise the 'chimney' in the picture.

Just a little anecdote about the signal box at Shoe Mill in the picture above. As a child, much of my time was spent at the Shoe Mill area. There was a five-barred gate by the signal box. My best mate, David Ratcliffe and I would sometimes hang on the gate to watch the trains go by. The signalman sometimes used to invite us into the signal box for a cup of tea. Once inside he used to allow us to try to pull the levers which changed the track direction. Neither of us were strong enough to pull them, mind you we were only about 7 or 8 years old. It's strange how times have changed. If you heard of some signalman now inviting two young kids into the signal box for a cup of tea you would immediately be suspicious that he was some kind of pervert or something. What a damn shame. The guy who invited us in gave us tea, entertained us and educated us about the signal box and the workings of the railway lines and we went home happy and totally unabused. Far, far better times methinks.

Yes, my friend Valerie Eland, with whom I keep in touch by email, told me that Lucy had her 100th. birthday coming up. Bloody good for her. I always liked Mrs. Ratcliffe. David is my oldest friend.

Hello.
I can explian the photo of the train in the wrong platform, as my dad (DH Dyson) took the photo. Firstly it's a breakdown train, not a goods train. It reversed wrong line from the loco shed to take water in the station. Water was taken from under the footbridge, as watering facilities were attached under the footbridge on lines towards Colne. If you look at the tender you can see this happening. The breakdown train then set off towards Blackburn, crossing over to the correct line after it left the station.

Accrington station did have a turntable, but it was removed when the shed was demolished and a new one built next to Lonsdale Street.

It would have been late 40's / early 50's when my grandad took me to the stabling for the carthorses he worked with doing his goods deliveries for LMS. Although a youg lad at the time, I seem to recall that it were alongside the tracks somewhere near Accy station.
Can anyone reveal the location ?
