Old Map in Observer
Did anyone notice the hand drawn map in last weeks Observer. Supposed to be 1849. It has no railway on it, but the railway came to Accrington in 1848. Just look at the First edition O.S. maps on Mario website.
Or am I missing something? What do you more informed people think? Chris. |

Re: Old Map in Observer
Thread wander...sorry, but just noticed on the 1848, the area up Fern Gore is called 'Old Accrington'. Never heard of that before, anyone throw any light on it?

Re: Old Map in Observer
Old and New Accrington refers to the two villages that became Accrington. The boundries are clearly marked an old maps.
It came about because of copyholds in the early days, when some one dropped a clanger and all deeds had to be sent to London for examination. Those with clear title were known as the Old Copyholders and the others became the New Copyholders. That part on Friar Hill was part of the Old Copyhold. Old accrington was centered around Bull Bridge and New Accrington was centered around St James Church. Walter |
