Re: Davy st

When my Dad first came to Accrington in the 1940s before he met Mum he used to live in lodgings in Davy Street so I was told, I was born in 1952, I cant remember Davy Street but I understand it used to be where the telephone building is at the back of Peel Street off Infant Street before you get to Brookes Club. The construction at a guess would be between 1955 to 1960.

It must have gone by the time I started door knocking for the 'social' in 1971 - I have never heard of it and there weren't many streets I didn't visit.

There were 16 houses in Davey St, 8 back to back with Bank St and 8 back to back with Bridge St. There were 3 long drop toilets at the end of the block which was back to back with Bridge St, for all 32 residents. It was demolished circa 1949 to make way for the new telephone exchange

Re: Davy st

thanks for your info I am a bit confused because I had thought I had watched some of the telephone exchange being built and the last of the houses being cleared bearing in mind I was born in 45 perhaps it took a long while to build
thanks

Well it was certainly there in 1965 because I worked there doing some maintenance when I worked for Pilkington Bros

Hi, i seemed to recall that Davy Street was either side of "Little" Blackburn road, so as well as the part where the telephone exchange was built, Davy Street was also the street the side window of ARGOS now is. Its where Whewells shop is.

This shows the "top end" nearest to the GPO, being demolished.

Re: Davy st

My good friend RETLAW says I have got it wrong, and that Davy Street was only the side nearest to the GPO, so I apologise.
