It was on the lefthand side behind that red brick wall as you go up Royds Street. I was born there in 1951, too (14th March). Maybe we were there at the same time?

Now Wynonie.
Thas lost thi bearings the red brick wall on the left is the nursery school.
The direct way to the old Rough Lee maternity unit, was to go up Rough Lee Rd, from Christ Church St.

Adrian Shurmer described it in 1988 in his Official Guide of Hyndburn as a 'home for the physically handicapped' .. has it changed its use again since then, or does this description also include a hospice ?

Would be interesting to know who was the first and last person to be born at Rough Lee .. sure was logged in the press at the time.

Sorry, Retlaw, my mistake. Always thought it was behind that wall - don't know why.

Last I heard it was still a care home, run by the Alex Group.

Think Julie Hesmondalgh is a patron.

Yes, this is the last entry on it Caz, bit of both with the looks of it. Just good this fine old building is being put to good use.

Never know, may have been born there and could end up there :-

I was born there in 1957. It is indeed still a Residential Care Home for the Disabled. The Old Building was demolished, but part of the old wall is still standing.

Best Regards - Taggy

Sorry, can't help with recent photographs, but came across this...

'The residence was formerly the home of Major William Nutter J.P. who was a decendant of Mistress Nutter of Rough Lee, Pendle Forest and she is of Lancashire Witches fame. The Nutter's named their Accrington home Rough Lee after the Pendle home of their ancestress.'

Just been up the road & took these, there not too good as the light was wrong. Part of the perimeter wall still stands, one of the out buildings was renovated, using some of the stone from the original buildings.
The last person to use it as a residence, was Major George Nicholas Slinger. He lost two sons in WW1, George Nicholas Junr and William.
George Senr, was one of the officers in the original Accrington Pals, but he never served with them, in May 1915, Lt/Col Rickman transferred him to the 12th Battalion.

Gosh, was completely demolished then Retlaw, didn't realise. What a shame, was a lovely building. Still suppose it was cheaper to do this rather than modernise the old building.. :(
