Old wooden cabin
 

Hi, just found this old newspaper cutting. Who can remember the old wooden cabin at the bottom of Oak Street, where newspapers and fags etc. were sold?

that was also painted dark green in its later years if memorys correct.:) we always called that shade= Lavatory Door Green.:D

Yes, remember it well cash, sold toffee too, coldsfoot? rock and uncle Joes and pomfrepat cakes.

I too can vaguely remember this.It must have been removed in the early to mid 80's

Just spotted this. Garth Dawson's father had a shoe repair business in that wood cabin, and Garth when he first started had his darkroom in the back, then he moved to Infant St, then on to little Blackburn Rd. That wood cabin was one of the casualties when the Bayt Horse buildings collapsed one Wednesday afternoon

Have you got your "wood cabins" mixed up Retlaw my pal? I think the one you are talking about was on Church Street, NOT the one I show a photo of, which was at the bottom of Oak Street.

I remember it too, though I cannot remember the Bat Horse buildings. I thought they went many years ago. I thought the chap in the doorway was Retlaw for a minute.

The wood cabin I'm refering to was on the pavement on Church St about 25 feet to the left
of the Pals Memorial, the Bay Horse buildings would have covered the memorial. The Bay Horse buidings collapsed in the mid 1960.
I could look up the right date in the reports but I do know it was a wednesday.

These 'Bay Horse buildings' on Church St....were they on the church side of the street, where I think there is small garden area now?

If so, I have a vague childhood memory of attending a dancing class in the large upstairs room.

Spot on Margaret, there was a lady who held dance classes on the top floor, I think one of the ground floor shops sold furniture.

I have remembered her name now - Miss Harker - a bit of a dragon - I didn't go there for long. She taught ballet. My flat feet had no chance of coping with 'going up on points', so I switched to Renee Cosgrove's class for tap dancing.

Thats her, after the Bay Horse buildings collapsed she moved the dance classes to the top floor of the place on the corner of Holme St & Church St, think its now called Baileys.

madam harkers has she was known in the forties also ran a saturday night ballroom dancing session with herself in charge of the music I myself along with about fifty others were classed as regulars when she at last got to old to run it as she wanted she retired we all then transfered to the ritz ballroom and danced to sid ashmead instead
