Hi, just found this old newspaper cutting. Who can remember the old wooden cabin at the bottom of Oak Street, where newspapers and fags etc. were sold?

that was also painted dark green in its later years if memorys correct.:) we always called that shade= Lavatory Door Green.:D

Yes, remember it well cash, sold toffee too, coldsfoot? rock and uncle Joes and pomfrepat cakes.

Have you got your "wood cabins" mixed up Retlaw my pal? I think the one you are talking about was on Church Street, NOT the one I show a photo of, which was at the bottom of Oak Street.

I remember it too, though I cannot remember the Bat Horse buildings. I thought they went many years ago. I thought the chap in the doorway was Retlaw for a minute.

These 'Bay Horse buildings' on Church St....were they on the church side of the street, where I think there is small garden area now?
If so, I have a vague childhood memory of attending a dancing class in the large upstairs room. |

madam harkers has she was known in the forties also ran a saturday night ballroom dancing session with herself in charge of the music I myself along with about fifty others were classed as regulars when she at last got to old to run it as she wanted she retired we all then transfered to the ritz ballroom and danced to sid ashmead instead
