Mount Pleasant, Christ Church area
 

I know I'm in good company here as you've been of great help in the past so...
Can anyone tell me where Mount Pleasant was (I assume it's long gone). I have been doing a bit of family research, like you do - and I would love to know just where this place was. I lived for many years in the area and the name rings a bell with me but I just can't find it - help please?

There is a Mount Pleasnt in Ossy, and another in Clayton-le-Moors, but I haven't heard of one in the Christchurch area.
The local history buffs will be along soon - keep looking here.
My history hobby is more concerned with the stone circle on the moors

off manchester rd just before oakhill park= Mount Pleasant St. near Timber St i think. so that looks good.

Think this is the same thing Cashy, but there was a row of back to back houses with Mountain Lane called 'Mount Pleasant' ... they have been knocked through now and the Mount Pleasant address is no longer used. Gawd ! Sure you not lying about yer age .... :D

No, seems you are correct Cashy .. but not quite Mt. Pleasant Street ... just 'Mount Pleasant'. This is Atarah and Retlaw's stomping ground, they will know all about it.

Yep, Christchurch area, in fact Retlaw knows it very well! Turn at the Park Inn on Manchester Road, go up Christ Church Street, turn left up Rough Lee Road and first left onto Mountain Lane. Both sides of the road once had "hidden" (back to back) addresses, now knocked through into one house. To the left (through a "ginnel") was Mount Pleasant and on the right hand side of the road was the hidden Richard Street. You had to go between the 4 cottages on the RH side and up towards the side of Holly Bank to get to Richard Street. Arrgh, happy days, I used to do a paper round in this area when I was 12ish (for Littlefairs on Nuttall Street)

Atarah's posting about the back-to-backs is interesting. Last weekend I attended a lecture about East Lancashire housing. Other towns had many more than we had, so this example of a house which used to be two houses with a shared back wall is unusual in Accrington. There is a commonly-held thought that the houses with a back street between them were called 'back to backs', but this is wrong. This is simply terraced housing.

My grandmother lived in a back to back at Paxton Court until her death in 1959
- accessed down a tunnel/ginnel on Scaitcliffe St.
She had only 2 rooms - living/kitchen and bedroom above.
The loo was a 'long drop' in the communal yard -each house had its own.

Many thanks - I can sleep tonight now! I suspected from the start that Mountian Lane might be involved somewhere, I used to walk that way to school at woodnook in the 60's so perhaps the metaphorical bells that were ringing were bringing that street to the fore. I couldn't find the address on the LCC first edition maps but I have access to 1845 maps at work so i'll have a look tomorrow.
