Chequers cottages in Clayton
Anyone got any idea how old the row of cottages at the top end of Chequers (higher up than the Castle pub)are, know they are quite old because they have stone stairs and flag floors upstairs , very low ceilings and doors . Be interesting to know if they predate the canal at the top of the street .

Sorry, can't help, but came across this, relating to Clayton-le-Moors.
'Nick of Dungnow' was a local notability of a different kind. Aikin (1795) says he was an idiot, 'of whose simplicity united with a natural shrewdness many tales are still current in popular tradition'; Country round Manch. 278. Townships - Clayton-le-Moors | British History Online Is he still talked about? Did find a nice photograph of the cottages. Panoramio - Photo of Chequers |
Re: Chequers cottages in Clayton
Some of my ancestors lived at 46 Old Chequers Clayton-le-Moors in 1861--see Census--.
From Garindas Photo there only appears to be 5 or 6 houses so back then in 1861 the street must have been much longer. My ancestors were called Iddon. |

Re: Chequers cottages in Clayton
I don't know if anyone is still interested in the date of Chequers cottages but I have just read a will by John Smith senior of Great Harwood 1800 and he mentions that he rents one of the cottages called the passage house to a John Broadley, so they certainly predate 1800, Marie Ball
