Haslingdens Old Work House, a skeleton and census returns

Tee hee. You dont often see this sight on a nice sunny morning - a skeleton!
Had reason to take a friend up to Rossendale Hospital earlier today, as he had some lost property to collect. Turns out it has now closed its doors to patients for EVER (yesterday being the last day!) Today and tomoz the staff are clearing out for their move to "whichever" hospital! Just happened to be there as they were wheeling a "skeleton" out, ready to go to a new home!

On a more serious note, some of the older buildings connected to this hospital were of course the old Haslingden Workhouse, where many an old Accringtonian had to spend their last days. In 1912 an extension was added. Not the best place to end your life apparently!

Dont know what will happen to all the buildings up there, but the Work House itself, its a fabulous building!

Link to site showing 1881 census for the Workhouse. If you look at the right hand side, there are quite a few folk from Accrington.

A fabulous acount here to read

Fasinating stuff, Atarah. I notice on the census returns that numerous inmates were classified as 'idiots' while others were 'imbeciles'. I wonder wherein lies the difference? It would be interesting to know, if only as a description for some of the contributors to this website.

I've got in my head 'Oliver Twist'....I was thinking of Cashy as the Beagle in the workhouse.

One other interesting point about the workhouse is that the show is run by a chap called Hay, who not only brings in his Missus to help, but his sister as well; they are the three top honchos. A case of nepotism if ever there was one.

Nowt's changed, then.

Cashy - I don't think you should be ribbing Atarah's posting in this way.

Is the nepotism 'skullduggery'?
