Well the flags are GB, France, Holland, Belgium in that order clockwise & as to the legend "Presented by the hope soldiers comforts committee" I would assume Red Shield/Toc H/Sallybash or some such similar institution which tended to the troops well being with tea/sarnies/papers/religious support or the likes & the award would've been given to one of their members for his/her ministering.

The rear looks to be hallmarked so I would assume they had grades of award for their "Soldiers of hope" dependent on their dedication. I don't know, just a random guess on my part, but as the others have said your man Retlaw is the fella who's likely to know if anyone, just see what he comes up with.

Speak of the devil, I see he's at this moment looking on:)

Its not something I've ever come across before.
I don't have a W.W. Chadwick in my files.

Don't think so John, although its WW1 its not military, don't get to library much these days, since the study room was closed and they moved the computers into the other room, it was too noisy, couldn't concentrate, now doing my research at home and getting more done, so far found the service records for near 2000 men in my files.
I can only suggest the owner of that medal presents it to Accy Library, they will give it a good home.

I think that the flag in the bottom right corner is the Russian flag, after the reversed saltire if I can describe it as such, before the USSR was formed and now back as the current Russian flag.

Yes I see what you mean (my mistake classing it as Holland)

Check out GENUKI: Notes from a Peakland Parish (Hope), Derbyshire, Chapter XII.. A list of those of the parish of Hope in Derbyshire who served. It includes W.W.Chadwick.

The 1911 Census shows William Wain Chadwick as a 14-year old schoolboy, born and living at Hope.

Errr....Why would the flag of the Netherlands be displayed? Holland remained neutral in WW1. The red, white, blue looks much more like the flag of Russia. While that country may well have exited the war in 1917, UK forces were fighting alongside White Russians right into 1919.
