Old Oswaldtwistle Map 1878

Bought this Old Map yesterday at a car boot sale and thought I would ask on here where people think it should be deposited for safe keeping.

I don't have an interest in the area but could not bear to see this original work disappear

I suppose the answer from everyone here is going to be Oswaldtwistle library, Anzac, so that everyone will have the opportunity to view it.
Hey, you don't half come across some good finds. Must go more to car boots and charity shops.

There is an exhibition in Ossy Mills, which displays estate plans & maps very much like yours.
Retlaw.

Am I right in saying that's the plot map for Walter Street and Robert St with John Street (leading from Union Rd to Merlin) on the bottom? My eyesight's knackered but it looks like that area with the river on the right.

Is this any better, it appears to show the owners of land the houses will be built on, not sure about the street names not familiar with that area of Ossy.

That is one of my problems. The Library service is again going through change and how long is Oswaldtwistle Library going to last.

You're right.

It names Walter Street.

Anyone not familiar with the area, it's in the vicinity of the library.

Which would make a fitting home.

Good find.

Well done.

I still can't read the detail, Walter - my eyesight, I'm afraid - but the general view appears to suggest that these are plots of land sold off to various developers for housing schemes back in the late 1870's.

If so, it would be interesting to find out how many of those names on those plots coincide with the names of various local mill owners of the time. Which raises the questions:

a) Were they simply providing housing for their workers?

b) Were they involved in speculative building ventures?

c) Or was it another lot altogeather, who were simply property developers involved in putting money up front to get an ROI somewhat higher than that in the weaving industry?

d) Or a combination of two or three of the above.

Either way, it does suggest that the idea of investment in property - rather than industry - goes back earlier than the 20C, and the rot in British manufacturing set in alot earlier than to what is usually subscribed.

Names on the plots -
George Walsh.
George Wood.
Henry Haworth.
William Hindle Bury and Anthony Woodworth.
John Riley and George Henry Barnes.
George Duckworth.

All still very common names.
Very near to where Wood's was until quite recently, who I think made steel drums, so might have a connection to the George Wood listed on the plan.

Yep..all common local names. I note that the last two - Barnes and Duckworth - are both street names in Church, although the latter was also a mill name (or at least was commonly referred to as that).

Although..Barnes with an 'e' - I forget.

Certainly the Rileys, Hindles, and Duckworths had homesteads locally, pre-industrial revolution.
