It wasn't Cave, it was a cave in. One evening a big hole appeared in the middle of the street about 68/69. There are numerous shafts and tunnels running all over below Accrington and much of the surrounding district or so I'm told. Could be an good area for discussion or research.

I knew it was a cave in, my old mucker. I understood you perfectly.

I remember that hole.

It's where I shot out of my mum, and hit the cobbles, with a ten pound thud, as she was hurrying down Ormerod Street, trying to get to the maternity ward.

A slight deviation, but the thread reminded of a sink hole in the news last year in Guatamala. See images here (it's number 3). Those are formed by natural geology rather than mine shafts/tunnels etc. I'm not saying that we have sink holes in Accrington before anyone pipes up.
