Horse Shoe inn

Does anyone know which brewery owned this pub? I am researching family history and found that a relative was living there when he died. I'd love to know more.

A tiny bit of info on here
Lost Pubs In Accrington, Lancashire

And I think pub names tend to be linked to a certain brewery, so horse shoe inn`s are probably a Thwaites.

It was a Thwaites' house, as was (is) The Nags Head, nearby . I'm not sure about the St Leger
Giving pubs the names of famous horses was a common practice

When I left school, my first job was apprentice joiner with a barfitters. Back then you could tell the brewery from the name of the pub. Might be different nowadays.

When did your relative die and can you give us a name?
A mate of mine lodged there until he died in the 70's.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

Hi Gremlin, many thanks for trying to help. It was much longer ago than the 70's, it was 1934 so no one is going to be around from those days. But i can contact the brewery as i know they hold records going back some time, which is why i wanted to know which brewery it was.

I hope you get more help from the brewery than I have had. Please give me a contact name if you get co-operation. I want someone to look at a pub's deeds.

I think the Horse Shoe Inn was in Crawshaw Street, back of Union Street, where the new bus station is going to be built. My Mum, Helen Addison nee Haworth, born in 1920, died last year, spoke of it. Her Mum died when she was 9 and I think the landlady of the pub was one of the "aunties" who helped to bring her up. The name Olive Palmer rings a bell - could possibly have been the landlady's daughter but could have been another neighbour or school (St. James') or Sunday School (Union Street Methodist) friend. I seem to remember that Olive's married name was Glasson, had a daughter Pamela at the High School when I was, though a few years younger. Pamela (don't know her current name or whereabouts) will be 60ish now.

Think I'm wrong about name of landlady. I think my Mum said her name was Mrs. Clayton. This would be in the 1920s/early 1930s.

Thanks Judith. None of those names are known to me, but then sometimes names fall into place at a later date.
