Horse Shoe inn

Does anyone know which brewery owned this pub? I am researching family history and found that a relative was living there when he died. I'd love to know more.

A tiny bit of info on here
Lost Pubs In Accrington, Lancashire

And I think pub names tend to be linked to a certain brewery, so horse shoe inn`s are probably a Thwaites.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

It was a Thwaites' house, as was (is) The Nags Head, nearby . I'm not sure about the St Leger
Giving pubs the names of famous horses was a common practice

When I left school, my first job was apprentice joiner with a barfitters. Back then you could tell the brewery from the name of the pub. Might be different nowadays.

When did your relative die and can you give us a name?
A mate of mine lodged there until he died in the 70's.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

Hi Gremlin, many thanks for trying to help. It was much longer ago than the 70's, it was 1934 so no one is going to be around from those days. But i can contact the brewery as i know they hold records going back some time, which is why i wanted to know which brewery it was.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

I hope you get more help from the brewery than I have had. Please give me a contact name if you get co-operation. I want someone to look at a pub's deeds.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

I think the Horse Shoe Inn was in Crawshaw Street, back of Union Street, where the new bus station is going to be built. My Mum, Helen Addison nee Haworth, born in 1920, died last year, spoke of it. Her Mum died when she was 9 and I think the landlady of the pub was one of the "aunties" who helped to bring her up. The name Olive Palmer rings a bell - could possibly have been the landlady's daughter but could have been another neighbour or school (St. James') or Sunday School (Union Street Methodist) friend. I seem to remember that Olive's married name was Glasson, had a daughter Pamela at the High School when I was, though a few years younger. Pamela (don't know her current name or whereabouts) will be 60ish now.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

Think I'm wrong about name of landlady. I think my Mum said her name was Mrs. Clayton. This would be in the 1920s/early 1930s.

Thanks Judith. None of those names are known to me, but then sometimes names fall into place at a later date.

Wasn't the Horse Shoe Inn near the blacksmith's?

There is a photo of the Horse Shoe in my book 'Accrington Acclaimed'. Posting photos is beyond my technical ability

Yes, I just about remember the blacksmith being at the bottom of the same street, I think it was across from the Blockade.
It was about 1970 when I started frequenting the Horse Shoe.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

I remember a woman called Phillamina ( probably spelt wrong) who lived three doors down from the Horse Shoe, she played the piano there and liked a drink, to say the least.
Next door to the pub lived Stan Hindle and next to him Ted Sharples.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

I spoke only yesterday with a mate about the blacksmith. I told him I could still smell the horses' hoofs. It was impossible to walk past the doorway without leaning on it and having a gander inside. One of the smiths left to breed shires horses in Hampshire (?) but is now in France, still with a few horses.

The Horse shoe Inn was at the bottom of School St at the junction with Crawshaw St. The Blacksmiths (Fitzpatricks) was the first building on the left as you turned into Crawshaw St from King St. Then next to it was a wholesale newsagent, the first house was where my aunt Maud lived, then quite a few houses before you came any where near the Horse Shoe whose address was 17 School St.

Know what you mean about the smell, Bob.

I mean the Blacksmiths not the pub Retlow. Around that time, we thought the licensees name at the little lads pub ( Horse Shoe ) was Walt. Don't remember his surname.

Re: Horse Shoe inn

1951 Directory says that T Fulcher was the blacksmith.

The Horsehoe's landlord was W.Packer.

I knew it in the 50's/60s and it was always referred to as Fitzpatrick's even if he wasn't around by then.
