Annual picnics

Up to the 1960s, tradesmen and shopkeepers in the town took a day off mid-week in the summer to go together, often on consecutive Wednesdays, and went on a picnic by chara to places such as Lytham, there to desport themselves at bowls, sup ale and generally have fun. There was a name for these picnics. Was it a waysgoose ?

Re: Annual picnics

I drove the Chara once or twice to take the business or trades people on the Wednesday "Ride out".
Best do was lunch at the County at Carnforth then Cartmel races and finally a big booze up in Morecambe.
They had a whip round and gave me near as much as a weeks wage.
I took the ladies from a trade guild on a similar trip and am still shaking and scarred from the experience. Wild I say, wild when inebriated and me a young innocent.
